چکیده

This communication describes a procedure to estimate thevertical profilesof stratospheric aerosols based on the visible data tobe obtained byADEOSIILAS. Our algorithms mainly consist of twoparts: the first process is baseline estimation for the observed trans-mittance spectrum, followed by the inversion process that derives ver-tical profilesof atmospheric extinction from ILAS transmittance data.Model calculations with anILAS simulator show that our treatmentprovides quick and accurate results within the expected domain of va-lidity.

Soil moisture limitations on monitoring boreal forest regrowth using spaceborne L-band SAR data

A study was carried out to investigate the utility of L-band SAR data for estimating aboveground biomass in sites with low levels of vegetation regrowth. Data to estimate biomass were collected from 59 sites located in fire-disturbed black spruce forests in interior Alaska. PALSAR L-band data (HH and HV polarizations) collected on two dates in the summer/fall of 2007 and one date in the summer ...

Carbon, Trace Gas, and Particulate Emissions from Wildfires in the Boreal Regions of North America

Large wildfires have a considerable impact on the atmospheric concentrations of CO2, CO, O3, NOx, and CH4 across North America. Carbon releases can be as high as 4 to 8 kg C-m per fire event. These emissions significantly affect concentrations far downwind. With funding from NASA, the Joint Fire Science Program, NSF, and the Canadian Government, US and Canadian researchers have been developing ...

Impacts of Spatial Variability on Aboveground Biomass Estimation from L-Band Radar in a Temperate Forest

Estimation of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) has become one of the main challenges of remote sensing science for global observation of carbon storage and changes in the past few decades. We examine the impact of plot size at different spatial resolutions, incidence angles, and polarizations on the forest biomass estimation using L-band polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar data acquired by NA...

Determination of Stand Properties in Boreal and Temperate Forests Using High-Resolution Imagery

The existence of a relatively long (ca. 40 yr) satellite imagery archive for examination of potential worldwide forest change motivated an inspection of the relation between forest features observable from higher resolution airborne and satellite imagery and measures of forest biomass, height, and age. Using these data, we inspected the relation between stand age, mean diameter, height, and sta...

Non-Parametric Retrieval of Aboveground Biomass in Siberian Boreal Forests with ALOS PALSAR Interferometric Coherence and Backscatter Intensity

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of two recently popular non-parametric models for aboveground biomass (AGB) retrieval from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) L-band backscatter intensity and coherence images. An area in Siberian boreal forests was selected for this study. The results demonstrated that relatively high estimation accuracy can be obtained at a spat...
